Hawkshead Medal Scoop
Wines from Hawkshead Vineyard have thrilled owners Denis Marshall & Ulrike Kurenbach with medal winning performances in recent wine shows.

The first vintage of their Gibbston Single Estate Hawkshead Pinot Gris 2009 won double Blue/Gold and Top 100 medals at the recent 2010 Sydney International Wine Competition.

Then, the just announced Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2010 produced three medals for the vineyard including another Gold Medal for the exceptional Pinot Gris, a Silver for the Hawkshead Riesling 2009, and a Silver for the Hawkshead Pinot Noir Bannockburn 2008.

"While Central Otago is well known for its exceptional Pinot Noir, it is very pleasing to have such success with our Aromatic white wine varietals," said Mr Marshall.

"We really had to nurse the young Pinot Gris vines through their early development in a difficult climate, and they have given us due reward," Ulrike added. "Our 2008 Riesling was also well received and last year's vintage was selected in the annual summary of the 'Best of the Best' in the Australian WineState Magazine as well as being awarded 4 Stars by wine critics. While the 2009 Riesling is still a young wine we think it will develop further to surpass the 2008 vintage," she said.

HAWKSHEAD PINOT NOIR 2007 | REVIEWS
Nick Stock in WBM, Australia's Wine Business Magazine, March 2009
93 Point Rating
"Animated Pinot Noir aromas here, violet florals with very concentrated dark cherry fruit and a super-fresh piercing quality. Edgy stuff! The palate delivers ample flavour, some orange zest and graphite in there too, finishing with a fan of fine savoury tannin."

HAWKSHEAD PINOT NOIR 2006 | REVIEWS
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #176, April 2008
93 Point Rating
"A lovely, lifted nose of brambly red fruit with a hint of cloves... good complexity and definition. The palate is medium bodied, very well balanced with a natural sense of elegance about it. Beautiful crisp red berries, wild strawberry and forest floor on the finish. Good length. This is a top quality Pinot Noir. Excellent. Tasted January 2008. Drink 2008-2015. 93 Point Rating"

Bob Campbell MW, BobsWineReviews.com, July 2007
93 Points, 5 Stars
"Dense, deep wine, very conc with layers of black fruit flavours and lovely spicy oak. Very impressive. Great texture and good drying finish."

Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wine 2008
4.5 Stars
"The impressive 2006 vintage (4 & half stars) is a single vineyard red, hand harvested at Gibbston, in Central Otago and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques (40 per cent new). Scented and deeply coloured, with concentrated sweet-fruit flavours of cherries and dried herbs, woven with fresh acidity, it shows excellent complexity and potential."

Wine & Spirit Magazine, November 2007
90 points
"Denis Marshall's winery is named after the home of his ancestor, the naturalist William Swainson FRS, who emigrated to New Zealand in 1841. Aided by winemaking consultant Grant Taylor, he produces just one wine. His 2006 is a svelte, smoky cocktail of lush berry and plum flavours, with hints of chocolate and spice. Drink 2007-2012."

Cuisine Magazine, November 2008
4 Stars, Recommended
"The aromatic sensuality cries Pinot; the wine's balance, grip and elegance all say Gibbston Valley. A good package," noted Larry McKenna.

Gibbston Twister shows a fleeting artistic bent
A freak twister or "willy waugh" conjured up a figure reminiscent of a Salvador Dali painting on Tuesday at Gibbston's Hawkshead Vineyard. Hawkshead owner Denis Marshall said vineyard owners were laying out new nets over a Pinot Gris block when the wind sprang up from nowhere. Read the full article at odt.co.nz »
