Five years after our initial planting we were rewarded with our first full production in 2006 which will be remembered as a truly 'vintage year'. A short and uniform flowering and plenty of sunshine in early spring, followed by a wonderful warm summer, and a classic long dry autumn to finish the season, ensured an excellent vintage.

2006 TASTING NOTES
Our 2006 Hawkshead Pinot Noir captured these conditions with brilliant garnet colour, a slight purple edge, and aromas of sun drenched dark berryfruit, and ripe plums. It is reminiscent of Damask Rose with perfumed floral notes and a hint of hillside thyme. The wine is lively and vibrant on the palate with restrained fruit and balanced acidity. Unfolding layers of flavour are ripe dark berries, chocolate, cardamom and thyme are carried by fine structured tannins. 2006 Hawkshead Pinot Noir is a wine with body, wonderful mouth feel, and great length.

Pinot Noir, Hawkshead, Central Otago, New Zealand 2006
Denis Marshall's winery is named after the home of his ancestor, the naturalist William Swainson FRS, who emigrated to New Zealand in 1841. Aided by winemaking consultant Grant Taylor, he produces just one wine. His 2006 is a svelte, smoky cocktail of lush berry and plum flavours, with hints of chocolate and spice. Drink 2007-2012. 90 points.

2005 TASTING NOTES
2005 was a definitely a cool climate vintage in the Gibbston Valley. As a single estate vineyard we reflect the seasons through the wine – it is truly a living embodiment of the vines, soils, climate and the skills of those tending the vines and making the wine. Our 2005 has benefited from cellaring over the past 12 months and is drinking very well indeed.

The aromas are of red berry/strawberry fruit, with some very pretty perfumed spice and earthy notes. The wine has a moderate body with great acidity carrying the flavours, and good length with very fine tannins. This wine is well balanced, and truly representative of the Gibbston Valley in a cool year.
