We are passionate about conservation in Aoteraoa /New Zealand. The NZ Nature Fund held a very successful fund-raising banquet at Kinross and twenty-four  2019 First Wine Magnums, donated by HAWKSHEAD were auctioned to raise money to support the recovery of the endangered Shore Plover. The artist Hannah Shand created stunning Huia labels for the Magnums and hand signed each of them. Four Magnums are still available and here is your chance to join our conservation efforts, not only to make a generous and meaningful donation to the NZNF, but also get rewarded with a fantastic, otherwise sold out, Gibbston Pinot Noir.

The 2019 First Vines Pinot Noir is our signature wine. This sophisticated wine is a pure expression of the Gibbston Valley. The palate detects sweet, vibrant red cherry, subtle spice and elegant floral notes. Soft, ripe acidity and seamless tannins are paired with uplifting aromatics and its depth of flavours deliver all what the discerning Pinotphile is looking for.

19.5/20pts, (95 pts) Gold Medal, Perfect to Outstanding

Bright, moderate ruby-red, slightly lighter edged. The bouquet is soft with intensity and layers, fragrant nuances of rosehips, thyme melded with red berries, cherries, along with spice, forest floor and subtle earth. Medium-light bodied, very elegantly presented, red berries and cherries are vibrant, enlivened by well-proportioned layers of spices, herbs and earth to linearity.

The wine has poise and structure, silky tannin and creamy palate extended a fine-textured mouthfeel; delicate spices adorn and enliven senses, along with lacy acidity provides a vibrant drive and vitality.

This is an elegant ballet dancer with delicate details and poised structure, possesses a multi-layer of finesse. Will benefit from further ageing, match with foie gras stuffed pigeon and black truffle risotto over the next 8-10+ years. Fruit sourced from Gibbston, clones 114 (62%), Abel (25%) and 667 (12.5%), handpicked, fermented with 38% whole bunches, 26 days skin contact, early MLF, 13% alc. Then aged in French oak barrels for 10 months (50% new oak), no fining.  Apr 2021

Excellent quality, verging on outstanding.

Estate-grown at Gibbston, the elegant 2019 vintage (4.5*) was hand-picked from 18-year-old vines and matured for 10 months in French oak barrels (50 per cent new). Ruby hued, it is mouth-filling, savoury and supple, with vibrant cherry, plum and spice flavours, woven with fresh acidity, silky tannins and a seductively smooth finish. Already drinking well, it should break into full stride mid-2022+.

96/100pts,  Outstanding quality showing varietal purity and exemplifying regional type

It's wonderfully composed and exquisitely styled, showing ripe plum, roasted nut, game, olive and truffle characters on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate delivering soothing texture and multi-layered mouthfeel. Splendidly structured by loads of fine tannins, finishing impressively long and engaging. From the Gibbston district. At its best: now to 2032.

Sub-Region: Gibbston
Colour: A richly coloured, ruby Pinot Noir

The aromatics invite an intriguing sensory journey of bright red fruits, violets, sun-warmed wild herbs and earthiness. The mineral-driven palate deliciously accentuates sweet, vibrant red currant, hallmark dried herb with a hint of spice and elegant rose-hip notes. This young wine shows excellent concentration. Refined acidity and ripe, silky tannins lead to a long vibrant yet harmonious finish. This is a premium, lively wine, with finesse, softness and class. It will cellar exceptionally well for 10+ years, although it is immensely beautiful and enjoyable now.
